Help send the Brightest Lights in San Miguel to University by Kimberly Kinser* |

Most reading this article have had the benefit of higher education. And the majority of us did not complete that education in a vacuum. It often takes a community to educate our youth, and Jóvenes Adelante started building an educational community in San Miguel in 2001 with four students. Today they support 75 students through five years of university. On March 28th, you can join the Jóvenes community and enjoy a great party. Your ticket includes a free drink, appetizers, entertainment, and auction. The Bright Lights Auction is part of the JA fundraising effort to help 30 additional students attend University in the fall. The auction items are as diverse as the JA students themselves, who are currently enrolled in over 32 different majors, from law to medicine, psychology, computer information technology and more. Close to 70 items will be sold through live or silent auction. You might decide to bid on an original encaustic landscape by Fran Schaivo or a scrappy log cabin quilt, antique basket from Zimbabwe, or high-fired "lady bird" planter. Indulge yourself by bidding on one of the many spa and beauty packages offered by McDonalds Gym or Salon de Robert. Or relax and heal with a reflexology treatment. Bid on a private wine tasting with cheese pairing that includes tasting with Reidel wine glasses. Enjoy a Japanese dinner for six served in your home or a cocktail party for 15 on the patio of the Sunset Bar. Or maybe you would like a private photo shoot to share with your family or the Iranian Koeliei Hamadan carpet for your sala. Students are chosen with care from over 100 applicants. Jóvenes Adelante’s ‘bright lights’ have the highest grades in their preparatorias (high school) and the least financial ability to further their education. Their scholarships do not pay all their expenses but help make the difference. Come for the fun and make a difference. With each ticket and each purchase you are helping a hard working student realize the dream of a university education. Change the life of a young student and, as Jóvenes Adelante has seen first hand, change the life of an entire community. For more information, their website is easy to remember: jovenesadelante.org. Hope to see you there! * Kimberly Kinser is a mentor/volunteer for Jovenes Adelante and leads creative writing workshops in San Miguel |
