About Us

Jóvenes Adelante was established to promote the education of the local population through scholarships and other services.

Our success is due primarily to the work of more than 200 members and volunteers. Because of San Miguel de Allende's special character as a 16th-century Spanish Colonial city and a UNESCO World Heritage site with a rich cultural center, it attracts many outstanding retiring professionals and active artists. Our new branch in Guanajuato, a picturesque university city, has brought many more outstanding volunteers to us.

Stephanie Hough, President

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Stephanie Hough is also a seasoned communications strategist with over 30 years experience in the U.S., Japan and Mexico. She holds a MBA in International Business Management and a BS in Marketing. Since moving to Mexico in 1994, she has directed many international projects for small non-profits and is currently Executive Director of the Baroque Music Festival in San Miguel.

Paul Germani, VP Assistant to the President

Paul Germani is a former CFO and Treasurer for a $45M manufacturing company in Eugene, Oregon. Since moving to Oregon he has been the controller for three manufacturing companies and a communications company. Prior to Oregon he was a teacher and counselor in New England. Paul spends his time in San Miguel struggling with the Spanish language and volunteering for Feed the Hungry. Since 2007 Paul and his wife have spent summers in Eugene and the rest of each year in Colonia Caracol.

Pat Harding, Past President

Pat holds a BS in physics and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Her career spanned software development and marketing in industrial automation for major corporations. In the mid-90’s, while working part-time at Apple, she and her husband founded a boutique travel business. She left her job as Worldwide Pricing Manager at Apple in 2005 to move to San Miguel

Mike Schiavo, VP - Treasurer

Mike is a former consultant and actuarial analyst for an international consulting firm.  During his phased retirement, he worked at CWRU administering NIH and NIDCR grants.  Mike has been a fulltime resident of San Miguel since 2005.

Sheny Kameko, Secretary

Born in Guatemala, Sheny's work experience spans teaching, human resources, volunteer services director for a health clinic, citizen assistant for the San Francisco mayor's office, program/traffic director for a Spanish TV network, accounting, and coordinating the Undergraduate Program Review for a university.

Sue Beere, VP - Volunteers

Susi is a three-time editor of Atención (San Miguel’s English-language weekly) and current member of the Biblioteca Publica's Board of Directors, the second largest biligual library in Mexico. She has been a fixture in San Miguel charitable and educational projects since 1971

Anna Adams, CO-VP - Guanajuato Branch

Born in New York, Anna holds a BA and MA in Spanish and Latin American Literature from Boston University and a doctorate in Latin American History from Temple University.  She taught Spanish and history at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA for 25 years.  She retired in 2006 as Professor Emerita and moved to Guanajuato.  Among her publications, she has written a bilingual history of the Latino community of Allentown, PA.

Amanda Kay Ruiz, CO-VP - Guanajuato Branch

A Guanajuato resident, Amanda is a former civil rights and class action attorney who specialized in poverty law issues including prisoners' and children’s rights, elder abuse, and disability law. Previously she worked in the oil and gas industry as a geophysical engineer

Keith Wall, VP - Publicity

Keith has a BA in English from San Diego State University and over his career has applied his writing skills in corporate and technical communications, training, marketing, and health care. He also operated a photo studio in Long Beach, California. His most recent employment prior to moving to San Miguel in 2005 was seven years as communications director and newspaper editor for an Oakland, California based non-profit.

Nancy Soles, VP - Mentor Program

Nancy was born and raised in Minnesota but spent most of my life in the Seattle area working in the medical comunity. She has a BA in Business and the Public Interest and a MA in Applied Behavioral Science. She retired and moved to San Miguel in 2005 after 15 years in private practice as a mental health therapist and employee assistance provider. Much of her time in San Miguel is spent working on her Spanish and teaching English (Warren Hardy style) to Spanish speakers.

Cecilla Thomas, Scholarship Chair

Fully bilingual and bi-cultural, Cecilia grew up in Tijuana, crossing the border every day to attend school in San Diego.  After moving to Seattle she begin a 25 year career with Homeland Security.  The last 5 years of her career were spent in Washington D.C. with the Container Security Initiative, traveling around the world training foreign customs officers and opening ports.  She retired to San Miguel de Allende in 2009.

Kimberly Fairbanks, Scholarship Chair

Kimberly moved here from Port Townsend Washington with her husband, Steve, 3 years ago.  Now residing in colonial San Raphael 8 months a year, she is a retired art teacher and an artist. She also enjoys kayaking, yoga, swimming, and dancing. She volunteers for the House and Garden tours, for FINO teaching English, and with Jovenes Adelante. She just got her certificate for TEFL.
